Assessment Activity

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions (guiding questions located throughout teacher textbook and listed at end of EATSonline printout) and completing independent activities on the objectives of analyzing the main conflict of the plot (textbook pg. 30), retelling story events (handout pg. 37/textbook pg. 30), evaluating the plot structure and development (textbook pg. 30), and determine the meaning of the selection vocabulary terms (handouts pg. 1,37,40/textbook pg. 31).

2.  At the end of the selection, students will complete a selection test to evaluate the mastery of analyzing the main conflict of the plot (questions 11,12,14,20), retelling story events (questions 1,3,4,6,7,8,9,10), evaluating the plot structure and development (questions 2,5,13) and determine the meaning of the selection vocabulary terms (questions 15-19).

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Read a newspaper article about people having a conflict of some sort.  Think about how the people dealt with the conflict?  Did they talk? Get Help? Fight?

2.  Read selection vocabulary, determine their meanings, and read sample sentences.  Complete a vocabulary check worksheet. (handout 1)

3.  Locate India on a world map.  Discuss people of India and their history.

4.  Read the fiction, short story entitled "Rikki-tikki-tavi" by Rudyard Kipling.  Participate in discussions during reading.  Analyze main conflict and evaluate the plot structure throughout the story. (handouts 37,40)

5.  Complete a "Response and Analysis" set of questions.  (page 30)  Retell the story events during this process.

6.  Complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Complete a study guide. (handout)

8.  Take a selection test of the short story entitled "Rikki-tikki-tavi."

9.  As a group, students will complete wall chart covering story elements. 

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Introduce a newspaper article about people having a conflict of some sort.  Lead discussion around how the people deal with the conflict, did they talk, get help, or fight.

2.  Introduce the selection vocabulary words, meanings, and sample sentences.  Assign  vocabulary check handouts. (handout 1)

3.  Guide students in their location of India using a world map.  Lead discussion of people of India and their history.

4.  Guide students during the reading of the short story entitled "Rikki-tikki-tavi" by Rudyard Kipling.  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students to identify the plot and its structure during reading. Continue to develop vocabulary terms using vocabulary handouts. (handouts 37,40)

5.  Discuss and model the "Response and Analysis" questions.  Guide students in the retelling of the story events.

6.  Discuss and model how to complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Discuss the study guide for the selection test.

8.  Review selection test and complete wall chart covering all story elements.

1.  Name the first conflict that Rikki faces in the story.  (Point out that this is the first time snakes have been mentioned.)  What effect does this remark create?      
2.  Identify the actions of Rikki and the cobras, what do these actions reveal about these "three" characters?      
3.  Identify who Rikki's enemies are.  Identify Rikki's friends.      
4.  Explain who Rikki's helper is.
5.  Summarize the battle with Karait.  How does this battle build suspense and advance the plot?      
6.  Explain the new information Chuchundra indirectly reveals to Rikki.  How does this information advance the plot?       
7.  If Rikki is the one that Nag and Nagaina want to be rid of, establish the reason Nag resists the idea of hunting Rikki on his own or with Nagaina. 
8.  Point out the reason why Darzee is concerned that Rikki might be planning to eat the cobra eggs.  Do you think he is being sympathetic, short sighted, or both?  Why? 
9.  Infer why Nagaina plans to kill Teddy.      
10.  What new twist is added to the plot when Darzee's wife screams for Rikki?
