Assessment Activity

1.  Students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions (guiding questions located throughout teacher textbook and listed a end of EATonline printout) and completing independent activities on the objectives of analyzing heroes and comparing/contrasting heroes.

2.  At the end of the selection, students write about a hero making sure to analyzing their heroes and comparing/contrasting their hero and another.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Write a short essay about someone you admire.   Include some characteristics about the person you admire.  Think of incidents that illustrate these characteristics in the person your writing about.  Participate in class discussion about your person and the characteristics that make them admirable.

2.  Read the nonfiction, autobiography entitled "Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela.  Participate in discussion during the reading.  Analyze heroes and compare/contrast heroes as you read.

3.  Think critically after the selection is read by answering some questions.  (852)

4.  Write an essay on their hero.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Guide students as the write a short essay about someone they admire.  Encourage students to include characteristics about the person and to think of illustrations to prove these characteristics.  Guide class discussion as students share information about the people the admire.

2.  Guide student during the reading of the nonfiction, autobiography entitled "Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela.  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students to analyze heros and compare/contrast heroes as they read.

3.  Guide students as they answer some "Thinking Critically" questions.

4.  Discuss and model writing an essay about a particular hero.
