1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions (guiding questions located throughout teacher textbook and at end of EATOnline printout) and completing independent activities on the objectives of identifying events that advance plot (handout 53), and determine how each event explains past or present actions; making inferences; identifying the main conflict of the plot and how it is resolved; evaluating the plot's structure and development and the way conflicts are resolved; determining the meaning of vocabulary (handouts context clues, 4,53,56); and analyzing the structure and purpose of informational texts, including an instructional manual.

2.  At the end of the selection, students will complete a selection test to evaluate the mastery of identifying events that advance plot (questions 3,4,6,7,8,9,10), and determine how each event explains past or present actions (questions 1,2); making inferences (questions 5,12,20); identifying the main conflict of the plot and how it is resolved (question 13); evaluating the plot's structure and development and the way conflicts are resolved (question 14); determining the meaning of vocabulary (questions 11, 15-19); and analyzing the structure and purpose of informational texts, including an instructional manual.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Quickwrite about a time when you jumped to an incorrect conclusion about someone or someone jumped to an incorrect conclusion about you. 

2.  Brainstorm about "plot complications" they have read about in books.  Discuss with classmates.

3.  Read selection vocabulary, determine their meanings, and read sample sentences.  Complete a vocabulary check worksheet. (handouts context clues, 4,53,56)

4.  Read the Drama entitled "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling.  Participate in discussions during reading.  Identify events that move the plot, make inferences, identify main conflict, and identify plot's structure. (handout 53)

5.  Complete a "Response and Analysis" set of questions.  (textbook pg. 78-80) 

6.  Complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Complete a study guide. (handout)

8.  Take a selection test of the short story entitled "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."

9.  As a group, students will complete wall chart covering story elements.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Begin selection by asking students to write about a time when they or someone else jumped to an incorrect conclusion.  Guide them with these sample questions:  What was the situation?  What mistake was made?  How was the mistake corrected?

2.  Introduce the term "plot complications."  Explain that plot complications help develop a story.  Complications add conflict and anxiety.

3.  Introduce the selection vocabulary words, meanings, and sample sentences.  Assign a vocabulary check worksheet. (handouts context clues, 4, 53, 56)

4.  Guide students during the reading of the drama "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling.  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students identify events that move the plot, make inferences, identify main conflict, and identify plot's structure. (handout 53)

5.  Discuss and model the "Response and Analysis" questions.  Guide students in the retelling of the story events.

6.  Discuss and model how to complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Discuss the study guide for the selection test.

8.  Review selection test and complete wall chart coving all story elements.
