Writing Workshop--Personal Narrative
Local Objective
At the end of this unit, students will be able to...
a. Use appropriate prewriting and drafting skills to create a personal narrative.
b. Revise the personal narrative by arranging events in a clear order, adding sensory details, and concluding with a statement explaining why the experience was important.
c. Reflect on and assess one's writing process and personal narrative.

Assessment Activity
1. The students will be assessed by participating in class discussions and completing each step of the writing process. Students will be assessed on their ability to use appropriate prewriting and drafting skills to create a personal narrative, in revising the personal narrative by arranging events in clear order, by adding sensory details, by concluding with a statement explaining why the experience was important, and by reflecting on and assessing one's writing process and personal narrative.

Learning Activity
The students will:
1. Participate in a class discussion about your last birthday party. Share details about how the party was celebrated. True stories fall into the category of a personal narrative.
2. Jot down important ideas about an event in your life. Freewrite about your experience and use these notes when writing. Think about what you learned, has it changed you, why this experience.
3. Using the writing process, begin writing a rough draft. Answer the 5W's-How?.
4. Organize your information either by chronological order or by comparison/constrast. Include transition words or phrases. Follow the framework for personal narratives guideline in the textbook.
5. Include elaboration and dialogue in your writing. Keep your point of view consistent.
6. Once paper is written, check your paper with the content and organization guidelines. Make necessary revisions and write a final draft.
7. Include your writing in your writing portfolio.
Instructional Method
The teacher will:
1. Guide students as they describe their last birthday party. Talk to students that even though their experience are the same, each party is unique in story.
2. Guide students as they choose a prompt. Encourage students to jot down ideas about an important event in their lives. The event can be happy, sad, frightening, embarassing, etc.
3. Begin a rough draft. Have students answer the 5W's-How?
4. Guide students as they organize their information. They can organize by chronological order or by comparison and contrast. Remind students to include transition words or phrases. In student textbooks is a framework for a personal narrative for students to following in writing.
5. Assist students with including elaboration and dialogue in their writings. Also assist students in keeping their point-of-view consistant.
6. Assist students will comparing their rough drafts to the content and organization guidelines. Discuss necessary revisions and guide students as they write their final drafts.
7. Collect student writings to be added into student writing portfolios.
