Assessment Activity

Informal Evaluations-Teacher will observe during discussions of the general rules for capitializing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles. Guided practice will be given to students to help them gain an understanding of the general rules for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles.

Independent Activities-Students will complete a variety of independent activities that will show they understand and can apply the general rules for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles. Independent activites can include proofreading sentences to correct capitalization errors, proofreading entire paragraphs to correct capitalization errors, matching of countries with abbreviations, or writing dialogues.

End of Unit Exam-Unit exam will determine if students can apply the general rules for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles. Students will show this understanding through proofreading sentences and paragraphs for capitalization errors, matching countries or states with abbreviations, or writing dialogue.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1. Listen to the introduction of the rules of capitalization. Note, some rules are confusing and may have to be memorized.

2.  Complete a series of guided practice examples on the marker board which will help show an understanding of the general rules for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles.

3.  Complete independent activities for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles by completing independent activities. 

4.  Review for the unit exam.  Questions will demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the general rules for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Give an introduction the rules of capitalization.  Rules can be confusing and may need to be memorized.

2.  Provide several sample sentences on the board for students to complete as guided practive examples.  The sample sentences will show an understanding of the general rules for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles.

3.  Guide students as they complete independent activities for capitalizing proper nouns, adjectives, first-person pronouns, first words, and titles by completing independent activities.
