Assessment Activity

Informal Evaluations-Teacher observations will be made during all guided practice. Students will copy the basic steps for preparing a formal talk from the markerboard or smartboard. Students will practice narrowing down a topic and writing a quick composition about their topic. Guided practice will help students to throw out unimportant ideas and to stay focused on their topics.  (Students will be making powerpoint presentations throughout the year.)

Independent Activities-Students will be given a topic to determine their purpose and their audience. They will gather all important information needed, get organized, and write their original composition.  Students will re-write their originals to deliver to a different audience.  (Students will be making powerpoint presentations throughout the year.)

Unit Exam-Students will deliver their formal talk to their audience.  A powerpoint may be part of the presentation.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1. Copy the basic steps from the markerboard or smartboard for "preparing a formal talk."  Those steps are choosing an interesting topic, determining the audience, deciding on your purpose, gathering your information, and organizing your information.

2.  Brainstorm several topics.  For example; snakes, sports, bikes, etc.

3.  Write down things known about these topics.

4.  Narrow information down into useful information and dispose of information that is unimportant.

5.  Decide who the audience is and for what purpose their writing.

6.  Organize information.

7.  Write an original composition on topic.

8.  Give mini-speeches to a partner.

9.  As a final exam for this unit, give a more in-depth topic to research and give a speech to classmates. (A five minute speech or powerpoint will be sufficient.)

10.  Discuss how speeches could be re-written so that it can be delivered to a difference audience. (Perhaps to a younger audience.)

11.  Re-write speech or re-create powerpoint for a lower grade.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Explain to students that when composing a formal talk, you use the same pre-writing steps as if you were writing an essay.  Remind students of the pre-writing steps:  choosing an interesting topic, determining the audience, deciding on your purpose, gathering your information, and organizing your information.

2.  Illustrate to students different brainstorming techniques such as webs, charts, pictures, etc.  Guide students as they brainstorm their topic.

3.  Help students to brainstorm things they "know" about their topic.  Encourage them to really think about their topic from all aspects.

4.  Once brainstorming technique is finished, help students to narrow down their information into information that is useful, and dispose of information that is unimportant.

5.  Once information has been gathered about your topic, decide who the audience is going to be for the speech and for what purpose we are writing the speech or creating the powerpoint.

6.  Guide students as they organize their information.  If dates or steps are involved, put them in order as they occur or happen.

7.  Guide students as they write their speeches or create their powerpoints (original compositions).

8.  Observe students as they give their mini-speeches to their partners.

9.  Help students as they do the whole process over in order to write a more in-depth topic.  Observe students as they present their 5 minute speeches.

10.  Brainstorm with students ways to improve their speeches/powerpoints or how to rewrite it so that it could be presented to a younger audience.

11.  Help students re-write their original mini-speech/powerpoint for a lower grade.
