Assessment Activity

Informal Evaluations-Teacher observation of students during Smartboard Activity. Students should be identifying verbs as either action or state-of-being. Observations should be made throughout all guided practice activities. Teacher will need to check the three verb tense paragraphs to make sure concept was gained.

Independent Activities-Daily assignments will be made as necessary after guided practice is accomplished and achieved. Students will be able to differentiate between main verbs and helping verbs, to understand the function of direct objects and identify them in sentences, to understand the concept of linking verbs and identify them and the words linked to the subject, to recognize and use the three verb tenses, and to recognize the basic patterns of words in sentences.

End of Unit Exam-Unit Exam will determine if students can correctly differentiate between main verbs and helping verbs, to understand the function of direct objects and identify them in sentences, to understand the concept of linking verbs and identify them and the words linked to the subject, to recognize and use the three verb tenses, and to recognize the basic patterns of words in sentences.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1. Begin by looking at an assortment of pictures with people doing various things.   Participate in a class discussion about what is happening.  Write down all the "verbs"; then as a class, identify if the verbs are action or state-of-being.

2. Start creating a chart in which you will title three columns as helping verb, main verb, and verb. Together, do a series of examples in which students take a main verb, add a helping verb to it, and create new verbs. 

3. Understand that all verbs have subjects, but not all have direct objects. Identify that verbs in different positions, have different purposes. 

4. Using a variety of sentences, understand the concept of linking verbs. Understand that words are linked to the subject by predicate nouns, predicate pronouns, and predicate adjectives.

5. Write three short paragraphs. First, write a short paragraph about something you did last week. Second, write the same paragraph as it was something you are doing right now. Third, write the same paragraph as if it was something you will do next week. Look at the verbs and discuss how the verbs were used as past tense, then present tense, and then future tense.

6. Understand the different sentence patterns. The first is a NVN pattern, the second is a NLVN pattern, and the third is a NLVADJ pattern.  Dissect several sample sentences.

7. Take a unit exam over verbs, main verbs, helping verbs, and verb tenses.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1. Begin by showing students an assortment of pictures with people doing various things. As a class, students should discuss what is happening. Students should write down all the "verbs"; then as a class, identify if the verbs are action or state-of-being.

2. Start students out by having them create a chart in which they title three columns as helping verb, main verb, and verb. Together, do a series of examples in which students take a main verb, add a helping verb to it, and create new verbs. Once students can differentiate between main verbs and helping verbs, they can use them correctly in sentences.

3. During lecture, the teacher should point out that all verbs have subjects, but not all have direct objects.
