Assessment Activity

Informal Evaluations-Teacher observations will be made during all guided practice. Students will be guided through the writing of two sample business letters and creating envelopes for each of them. Guided practice will help students compose business letters using both block and modified block formats. This practice will also help students to create envelopes for each of their business letters composed.

Independent Activities-Daily assignments will be made as necessary after quided practice is accomplished and achieved. In independent practice, students will compose business letters in both block and modified block format. Students will also create an envelope for each business letter composed.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1. Observe two business letters, one in the block format and the other in the modified block format.   Read each letter and determine if the letter is being used to request information, order products, or complain about products.

2. Using the sample letters, understand the six parts of a business letter. Those parts are the heading, inside address, saluation, body, closing, and signature.  Label each part of the letter.

3. Using the sample of a mixed up business letter, write the business letter in its correct order, both in block format and modified block format.

4.  Create an envelope for each of your business letters.

5. Using an old phone book, write a letter to two seperate business. First, write a sample block letter to request information from that business. Second, write a sample modified block letter to request information from that business.  Create envelopes for each business letter composed.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1. Hand out two business letters, one in the block format and the other in the modified block format.   Students will read each letter and determine if the letter is being used to request information, order products, or complain about products.

2. Using the sample letters, help students to understand the six parts of a business letter. Those parts are the heading, inside address, saluation, body, closing, and signature.  Guide students as they label each part of the letter.

3. Pass out a sample of a mixed up business letter, guide students as they write the business letter in its correct order, both in block format and modified block format.

4.  Guide students as they create an envelope for each of their business letters.
