Assessment Activity

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in class discussion and completing each step of the writing process.  Students will be assessed on their ability to use appropriate prewriting and drafting skills to create a story, to revise the story by adding more vivid language and descriptions to make the characters and setting more alive.  Students will also be assessed on their ability to reflect and assess one's writing process and story.

Learning Activity

The students will:
1.  Participate in a class discussion about well-known halloween TV shows and movies they have seen or want to see.  Discuss what it was that made these memorable...was it characters, setting, suspenseful plots, etc.
2.  Freewrite ideas in order to generate a story.  Brainstorm several ideas.  Then choose their favorite idea and which characters they want to use.  They need to make sure they have a plot and a setting in mind as well.
3.  Begin writing their rough drafts.  Think about from whose point of view the story will be told and stick to it.  Use dialogue if necessary.
4.  Once paper is written, check your paper with the content and organization guidelines.  Use peer evaluators as well.  Make necessary revisions and write a final draft.
5.  Include your final draft in your writing portfolio.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:
a.  Guide students as they discuss their favorite halloween TV shows and movies.  Encourage students to examine what makes those good stories.  Was it their plot, characters, settings, suspense, etc.
b.  Guide students as they begin freewriting ideas to generate a story.  Help students to brainstorm several ideas.  help them create interesting characters, plan their plot, and choose a setting.
c.  Assist students as they begin writing their rough drafts.  Remind students to figure out from whose point of view the story is being told and stick to it.  Assist students will using dialogue.
d.  Assist students will comparing their rough drafts to the content and organization guidelines.  Discuss and help students make necessary revisions and guide students as they write their final drafts.
e.  Collect student writings to be added into writing portfolios.
