Local Objective

At the end of this unit, students will be able to...
a.  Understand figures of speech (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole), images, sounds, and forms in poetry.
b.  Understand how to read poetry.
c.  Understand the literary devices that define a writer's style.
d.  Analyze how tone is conveyed in a text through word choice and rhythm.
e.  Analyze and explain the characteristics of poetry (lyric poems and sonnets).
f.   Analyze stanzas.
g.  Analyze couplets.
h.  Analyze free verse.
i.  Analyze an elegy.
j.  Analyze a catalog poem.

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions, studying and reading their "personal poems", and completing independent activities on the objectives of understanding figures of speech, how to read poetry, understanding literary devices, analyzing things such as tone, characteristics of poetry, stanzas, couplets, free verse, elegy, and catalog poems.

Learning Activity

The students will:
1.  Choose from a given list of poems.  Each student will silently read their poem to understand the tone and rhythm. 
2.  Look to see if they have any figures of speech in their poems.
3.  Read their poems to their classmates and at the end of each poem, discuss different details about the poems.
4.  Be active listeners during the reading of the poems.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:
1.  Present a number of poems for students to choose from. 
2.  Guide students in the reading of their poems to help determine tone and rhythms.
3.  Guide students in determining whether their poems have figures of speech included in them or not.
4.  Control classroom behavior during the reading of poems.
5.  Guide classroom discussion of each poem.
