Assessment Activity

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions (guiding questions located throughout teacher textbook and listed at end of EATonline printout) and completing independent activities on the objectives of analyzing irony, using prior knowledge, identifying the literary devices, summarizing an article, and determining whether a summary is an accurate reflection of an original text. (handouts 26,283,284; textbook 686)

2.  At the end of the selection, students will complete a selection test to evaluate the mastery of analyzing irony (questions 6,13), using prior knowledge (question 15), identifying the literary devices (questions 11,12), summarizing an article (questions 1,2,3,4,5,8,9,14), and determining whether a summary is an accurate reflection of an original text (questions 7,10).

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Write a short essay about Greed.  Explain how greed disrupts friendships, sparks wars, and topples empires.

2.  Read the fiction, myths/folk tales/legends story entitled "King Midas and the Golden Touch" by Pamela Oldfield.  Participate in discussions during reading.  Analyze irony and the literary devices used to create irony during the reading.

3.  Complete a "Response and Analysis" set of questions.  (p. 686)  Retell the story events during this process.

4.  Complete a handout of ordering events of the story. (handout)

5.  Complete a cause and effect chart.

6.  Complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Complete a study guide. (handout)

8.  Take a selection test of the fiction, myths/folk tales/legends entitled "King Midas and the Golden Touch".

9.  As a group, students will complete a wall chart of story elements.

10.  Read an article and summarize the article.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Guide students as they discuss the term greed.  Discuss and model for students to write a short essay about greed.

2.  Guide students during the reading of the fiction, myths/folk tales/legends story entitled "King Midas and the Golden Touch" by Pamela Oldfield.  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students identify irony and the devices used to create the irony.

3.  Discuss and model the "Response and Analysis" questions.  Guide students in the retelling of the story events.

4.  Discuss and model how to complete the worksheet covering story events in order. (handout)

5.  Discuss and model how to complete a cause and effect chart.

6.  Discuss and model of to complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Discuss the study guide for the selection test. (handout)

8.  Discuss and model how to summarize an article looking for the key terms.

9.  Review selection test and complete wall chart covering all story elements.
