Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Write a quickwrite about what you think the term "racial segregation" means.  Do you have to deal with such a term?  Have you ever seen people dealing with such a term?  Can you recall a time in history when people dealt with such a term?  Participate in a class discussion about "racial segregation".

2.  Read the nonfiction, biography entitled "Rosa Parks" by Rita Dove.  Participate in discussions during reading.  Analyze heroes and compare/contrast heroes.

3.  Complete a thinking critically set of questions. (page 860)

4.  Choose a writing assignment:  1) Write a comparison-contrast essay.  2) Biographical Sketch  3) Celebrating heroes.  Students will follow the writing process.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Guide students as they write a quickwrite about what they think the term "racial segregation" means.  Ask students if they or someone they know has experienced "racial segregation".  Have them recall a time in history when people dealt with such a term.  Have a class discussion about "racial segregation".

2.  Guide students during the reading of the nonfiction, biography entitled "Rosa Parks".  Assist students in analyzing heroes and comparing/contrasting heroes.

3.  Guide students as they complete the thinking critically set of questions.

4.  Discuss and model the writing assignment choices.  Students can 1) write a comparison-contrast essay about the heroism of Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks.  2)  Write a biographical sketch of either Nelson Mandela or Rosa Parks.  or 3)  Write a celebrating heroes essay about a person you think is a hero.
