Assessment Activity

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions (guiding questions located throughout teacher textbook and listed at end of EATOnline) and completing independent activities on the objectives of analyzing topic and theme; and analyzing narrative poems.

2.  At the end of the selection, students will complete a selection test to evaluate the mastery of analyzing topic and theme (questions 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,11,12,13,14,15); and analyzing narrative poems (questions 9,10).

3.  After the selection test, students will complete a link activity where students will anaylze text that show cause-and-effect relationhips.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Quickwrite was is needed for a nice "love story".  Include the setting, the characters, and the story line.  Participate in a classroom discussion.

2.  Read the poem entitled "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes.  Participate in class discussions.  Analyze topic and theme and analyze narrative poems.

3.  Complete a sequence chart for the poem.

4.  Complete a "Response and Analysis" set of questions. (textbook pg. 254)

5.  Participate in a vocabulary development exercise.  Understand figures of speech such as similes and metaphors. (handout Simile and Metaphor)

6.  Complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Complete a study guide. (andout)

8.  Take a selection test over the poem entitled "The Highwayman".

9.  Read the article "Gentlemen of the Road."  Analyze text that show cause-and-effect relationships.

10.  Analyze the article by answering questions. (page 259)

11.  As a group, students will complete wall chart covering story elements.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Guide students as they quickwrite about the things needed to have a "love story".  Encourage students to think about the setting, the characters, and the story line.  Guide students as they have a classroom discussion.

2.  Guide students during the reading of the poem entitled "The Highwayman".  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students to analyze the topic and theme, and to analyze narrative poems.

3.  Assist students as they complete a sequence chart for the poem.  Helps students to think about the main events of the poem to include in the chart.

4.  Discuss and model the "Response and Analysis" questions.

5. Discuss and model how to complete a plot chart. (general handout)

6.  Guide students as they participate in the vocabulary development exercise.  Help students find examples of figures of speech called similes and metaphors. (handout Simile and Metaphor)

7.  Discuss the study guide for the selection test.

8. Review selection test and complete wall chart covering all story elements.
