Assessment Activity

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions and completing independent activities on the objectives of analyzing omniscient points of view; making predictions; identifying the speaker; recognizing the difference between first and third person narration; analyzing voice, tone, persona, and narrator; and determining the meaning of vocabulary.

2.  At the end of the selection, students will complete a selection test to evaluate the mastery of analyzing omniscient points of view (questions 12,13,20); making predictions (questions 1,2,3,4,5,8,10); identifying the speaker (question 6); recognizing the difference between first and third person narration (question 14); analyzing voice, tone, persona (questions 7,9), and narrator (question 11); and determining the meaning of vocabulary (questions 15-19).

3.  After the selection test, students will complete an informational text activity where students will analyze the author's perspective.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Write a short advice paragraph about the advice you would give if a friend is doing something dangerous or illegal.

2.  Read selection vocabulary, determine the meanings, and read sample sentences.  Complete a vocabulary check worksheet. (handout 13,14)

3.  Read the fiction, short story entitled "After Twenty Years" by O'Henry.  Participate in discussions during reading.  Analyze omniscient points of view, make predictions (foreshadow), identify the speaker, determine if narration is first or third person, analyze voice and tone.

4.  Complete a "Response and Analysis" set of questions. (page 362)

5.  Write the narration from a different point of view.  Consider retelling a scene from Bob's or Jimmy's point of view.  Does this change the theme?

6.  Complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Complete a study guide. (handout)

8.  Take a selection test of the fiction, short story entitled "After Twenty Years."

9.  As a group, students will complete wall chart covering story elements.

10.  Read the article entitled "What's Really in a Name?"  Analyze the authors perspective.

11.  Analyze a selection by answering the questions about "What's Really in a Name?" 

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Lead discussion around how to give good advice, especially to a friend who may be doing something dangerous or illegal.

2.  Introduce the selection vocabulary words, meanings, and sample sentences.  Assign a vocabulary check worksheet. (handout 13,14)

3.  Guide students during the reading of the fiction, short story entitled "After Twenty Years" by O'Henry.  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students analyze omniscient points of view, make predictions (foreshadow), identify the speaker, determine if narration is first or third person, analyze voice and tone.

4.  Discuss and model the "Response and Analysis" questions.

5.  Discuss and model the writing of a narration from a different point of view.  Help students consider retelling a scene from Bob's or Jimmy's point of view.

6.  Discuss and model how to complete a plot chart. (general handout)

6.  Discuss the study guide for the selection test.

7.  Review selection test and complete wall chart covering all story elements.

8.  Guide students during the reading of the article "What's Really in a Name?"  Guide students in analyzing the author's perspective.
