Assessment Activity

1.  The students will be assessed by participating in classroom discussions and completing independent activities on the objectives of analyzing forms of prose, analyzing flashbacks, and determining the meaning of vocabulary.

2.  At the end of the selection, students will complete a selection test to evaluate the mastery of analyzing forms of prose (essay), analyzing flashbacks (questions 1,2,3,4,5), and determining the meaning of vocabulary (questions 6-10).

3.  After the selection test, students will complete an informational text activity where students will summarize text and understand main ideas.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Write a short essay about how far you would go to do the right thing?  How far would go to do the right thing even if you had to give up something special?

2.  Read selection vocabulary, determine their meanings, and read sample sentences.  Complete a vocabulary check worksheet. (handouts 23,209,212)

3.  Read the nonfiction, essay entitled "A Mason-Dixon Memory" by Clifton Davis.  Participate in discussions during reading.  Analyze the prose and flashbacks as you read.

4.  Complete a "Response and Analysis" set of questions (page 540) Retell the story events during the process.

5.  Write a persuasive essay on an issue that you really care about.  Identify the issue, then state your opinion of it.  List evidence that supports your opinion.

6. Complete a plot chart. (general handout)

7.  Complete a study guide. (handout)

8.  Take a selection test on the nonfiction, essay "A Mason-Dixon Memory" by Clifton Davis.

9.  As a group, students will complete wall chart covering story elements.

10.  Read the article entitled "Buddies Bare Their Affection for I11 Classmate."  Summarize the text and understand the main idea.

11.  Analyze the article by answering the questions about "Buddies Bare Their Affection for I11 Classmate."  (page 545)

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Instruct students to write a short essay about how far they would go to do the right thing.  Have them think about how far they would go to do the right thing even if they had to give up something special.

2.  Introduce the selection vocabulary words, meanings, and sample sentences.  Assign a vocabulary check worksheet. (handouts 23,209,212)

3.  Guide students during the reading of the nonfiction, essay entitled "A Mason-Dixon Memory" by Clifton Davis.  Guide discussion throughout the reading.  Help students to analyze the prose and flashbacks as you read.

4.  Discuss and model the "Response and Analysis" questions.

5.  Guide students has they write a persuasive essay on an issue they really care about.  Model the steps of identifying the issue, stating their opinion, and supporting their opinion with evidence.

6.  Discuss and model how to complete a plot chart. (general handout)
