Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1. On the markerboard, teacher will write a list of several words that include prefixes and suffixes. Students should copy each of the words down on their list and underline the root words.

2.  Students should circle either the prefixes or the suffixes. During this activity, there should be a discussion on whether the word spelling changes when the affix is removed. When students are in doubt, they should refer to a dictionary. Students should now be ready to discuss the meanings of each word. Students will be able to use root words to understand the meanings of unfamiliar words.

3. Using the markerboard, the teacher will create a chart for the students to copy onto their paper. The chart is a three column chart with the headings prefix, meaning, and examples. Through guided practice, students will be given a list of the most common prefixes and their meanings, and together, they will think of examples. Students will understand a prefix is a word part added at the beginning of a root word.

4. Students will be assigned to search through a textbook of their choice to find ten words with a prefix not discussed yet and add them to their chart. A class discussion will take place at the end of the activity.
