Assessment Activity

Informal Evaluations-Teacher will observe during discussion of the term appositive, proofreading for commas with appositives, and writing an original composition using at least one appositive. Guided practice will be given for students to try and identify the appositives and/or correctly punctuate the appositives.

Independent Activities-Students will read a friendly letter that contains several appositives. Students will proofread for commas or lack of commas with appositives. Students will also write a friendly letter which includes at least one appositive. Students will include their final drafts in their personal portfolios.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1. Understand the term appositive. An appositive is a word or group of words that follows a noun and renames or identifies it. Commas usually set off an appositive from the rest of the sentence.

2.  Identify the appositives using sentences on the markerboard or smartboard.

3.  Write several sentences which include an appositive.

4.  Read a short friendly letter that contains several appositives.  Proofread the letter for comma's or lack of commas with appositives.

5.  As a final activity for this unit, write an original composition using at least one appositive. Write a friendly letter to a friend explaining why they think their home town would be an ideal spot to place the United States Capitol. Include writing in their personal portfolios.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Guide students in gaining an understanding of the term appositive.  An appositive is a word or group of words that follows a noun and renames or identifies it. Commas usually set off an appositive from the rest of the sentence.

2.  Guide students as they identify the appositives using sentences on the markerboard or smartboard.

3.  Help student write several sentences which include an appositive.

4.  Provide students with a copy of a short, friendly letter.  Help students to proofread that letter for comma's or lack of comma's in appositives.

5.  Help students to write an original composition using a least one appositive.  Students should explain in their letter why they think their home town would be an ideal spot to place the United States Capitol.  Include writings in their personal portfolios.
