4. Define the word possessive. Write the meaning on your paper and discuss the word as a class. Take a series of several example sentences and correct them.
5. Students will take a unit exam of noun usage that demonstrates their ability to understand the concept of a noun, identify nouns in sentences, differentiate between common and proper nouns, differentiate between singular and plural nouns, form plurals correctly, and form/use possessive nouns correctly.
Instructional Method
The teacher will:
1. Pass out four strips of 2 inch by 4 inch paper to each student. As discussion takes place about what a noun is, have students write down an example of a person, place, thing, and idea. Once this is done, have students tape their examples on the wall. Class discussion should take place as to if their word is really an example of a noun. This activity will help students understand the concept of a noun and identify them in sentences.
2. Have students take the common nouns list on the wall, and make them all proper (if they can). Class discussion will take place as why a noun is considered common and why it is considered proper. These activities will help student differentiate between common and proper nouns. **Please note that all proper nouns are capitalized.
3. In writing, writers should use both singular and plural nouns. The seven rules for forming plurals of nouns will be introduced. Teacher will need to write each rule individually on the board with several examples. Students need to copy these rules onto their paper. This activity will demonstrate student knowledge between singular and plural nouns; and their ability to form plurals correctly.
4. Have a student get a dictionary and look up the word possessive. Write the meaning on the markerboard and discuss the word as a class. Make a two column chart on the board. Take several singular nouns and make them possessive. *Note: apostrophe and "s". Take several plural nouns that end in "s" and make them possessive. *Note: add an apostrophe. Take several plural nouns that don't end in "s" and make them possessive. *Note: add an apostrophe and "s". Students will now need to take a series of several example sentences and correct them. This exercise demonstrates students ability to form and use possessive nouns correctly.
5. Students will take a unit exam of noun usage that demonstrates their ability to understand the concept of a noun, identify nouns in sentences, differentiate between common and proper nouns, differentiate between singular and plural nouns, form plurals correctly, and form/use possessive nouns correctly.
