Unit

Feel the Heat--LAB

Local Objective

At the end of this lab, students will be able to...

a.  Measure the temperature change when hot and cold objects come into contact.

b.  Compare materials for their ability to hold thermal energy.

Objective used to evaluate students

Yes

Assessment Activity

Informal Evaluations--Teacher will observe during class discussion and questioning.  Teacher will observe to make sure students stay on task.

Independent Practice--Students will be following the procedure for this activity on their own.  Teacher can make a formal assessment on their work and ability to read and follow directions.

Assessment--A final assessment can be made of students answers to analyzing their results and drawing conclusions.

Learning Activity

The students will:

1.  Review all safety cautions and icons before beginning the lab activity.  ***Never use a thermometer for stirring.  Place container of hot water where it cannot spill on classmates.  Please handle nails carefully.

2.  Write a hypothesis that answers the questions "What happens to the temperature when you combine two substances of different temperatures?  What happens to the final temperature?"

3.  Follow the procedure outline listed on  pages 184-185 of the Holt Science & Technology (M) textbook.  Complete data table.

4.  Conclude this activity by analyzing their results and drawing conclusions.  During their activity, write down notes about the lab, those will be used to analyze and draw conclusions.

Instructional Method

The teacher will:

1.  Guide students during the review of all safety cautions and icons before beginning the lab activity.  ***Remind students to never use a thermometer for stirring, never place container of hot water where it can spill on someone, and be careful handling the nails.

2.  Guide students in writing their hypothesis' to help answer the two main focus questions for the lab:  "What happens to the temperature when you combine two substances of different temperatures?  What happens to the final temperature?"

3.  Guide students in following the procedure outline listed on pages 184-185 of the Holt Science & Technology (M) textbook.  Help students to complete their data tables.

4.  Guide students in analyzing their results and drawing conclusions about the experiment.  Show students how to use notes to analyze and draw conclusions.
